Work in Progress

(1) I started drawing this painting in August whilst I was stewarding at RAS summer exhibition.. Completing a very detailed drawing before putting any paint on the canvas. When I was happy with the drawing I covered the whole drawing with a glaze of white Acrylic paint, this is just to seal the drawing.  If I make any mistakes in my next layer I can just wipe it off and start again.

(2)  I then lay down a basic mid tone colour ( oil paint from now on)  And let it dry. The next layer I starting to put some  colours in the  fur of the Tiger and roughly indicate where the splash is going to be.

(3) At this stage I took the piece to Marwell Exhibition and continued to work on the fur for two days whilst in the Marquee. I would usually use many more colours, but during the time at Marwell several people asked if I was going to leave it the way it was. At first I said no. But the more people asked the more I thought about it. At this stage I still haven't made up my mind.

I then left it to dry for several days

(4)  I have now glazed over some of the background to push the splash forward and added more detail into the fur

Again it was left to dry, this time for a few weeks, whilst I completed a commission.

(5) Another glaze and I then start adding detail to the splash. I have now decided to keep the palette  limited as it seems to be working Ok

(6) I have now worked another glaze over parts of the water added the foam and extended the splash into the top right corner to balance the painting. I also realized the shoulder needed to be slightly wider to emphasise the movement..

Once again the painting is left to dry

 (7) A few final touches,  Add the whiskers  and the painting is complete.
